This piece accentuates the beauty of black woman carrying objects on their head with ease, something which is traditional in the motherland. I wanted Badu to capture this and exhibit how something which was once falsely considered a sign of a primitive life is actually a skill that black women execute effortlessly.
The vibrant background of this piece, created with warm shades of amber and orange, evokes comfort and solace. The application of these colours also signifies the various cultures of the different communities in the motherland.
The original piece has been completed using a range of yellow, amber and orange shades of acrylic paint on two pieces of white card sized 42 x 29.7cm each.
