M A Y A and Kameni exhibited in Athens, Greece
M A Y A (2020)
M A Y A is a striking and powerful piece that celebrates the beauty, courage, and resilience of a Black woman determined to rise in the face of adversity.
With her head tilted purposefully toward the light, Maya embodies hope, strength, and self-belief. This deliberate gesture symbolises the courage it takes to stand firm in one’s identity and convictions, even when confronted with challenge. The light becomes both a guide and a testament to her unwavering resolve.
Every detail within the piece contributes to its deeper narrative. The bold earrings and richly textured headwrap not only frame her presence but also honour Black culture, heritage, and individuality. These elements accentuate her strength and beauty, reinforcing the idea that cultural expression is both powerful and empowering.
Maya’s gaze and posture convey quiet determination—a reminder that resilience does not always need to be loud to be profound. Her strength lies in her authenticity, her refusal to dim her light, and her commitment to rising, regardless of circumstance.
As echoed in the words of W.E.B. Du Bois, “There is no force equal to a woman determined to rise.” This piece stands as a visual affirmation of that truth, celebrating the unwavering spirit, dignity, and inner power of Black women everywhere.
Kameni (2021)
Kameni is a commanding yet graceful portrayal of a woman who embodies strength, poise, and unwavering self-confidence.
Her presence is immediately felt through her composed posture and refined elegance. Every aspect of her stance communicates assurance without excess, allowing her natural confidence to take centre stage. The contrast of her black-and-white attire reflects both balance and versatility, symbolising the harmony between boldness and restraint. Carefully chosen accessories add a distinctive edge to her look, enhancing her individuality while preserving an air of timeless sophistication.
With her hair styled up, Kameni’s elongated neck becomes a focal point, inviting the viewer to fully appreciate her refined features and natural beauty. This deliberate composition draws attention to her quiet authority—an elegance that does not seek validation, yet commands it effortlessly. The gentle gesture of her right index finger resting near her lips introduces a moment of intimacy and contemplation, while her relaxed left hand reinforces a sense of ease and inner certainty. She does not rely on exaggerated movement or contrived posing; her presence alone is enough.
Kameni’s confidence is subtle but resolute. It is the confidence of a woman who knows herself, who stands firmly in her authenticity, and who understands the power of self-possession. There is no performance here—only truth.
Form me, Kameni stands as a powerful statement piece, celebrating the beauty of embracing one’s true self. It reflects the idea that authenticity is not only liberating, but also the foundation of genuine confidence…. confidence that radiates outward and speaks before words ever could.
